Prof. Madhubala is the Director of, the Centre for Digital Public Health (CDPH), and Senior Advisor, R & D, at the Indian Institute of Public Health Hyderabad. (from 1st July 2024 onwards).
Prof. R. Madhubala is an eminent, nationally and globally recognized academician-researcher-administrator. She has been a Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi for three decades, with a very strong track record both academically and administratively. She was awarded the AS Paintal Distinguished Scientist Chair of ICMR for five years till August 2022. Earlier, she was Dean of the School of Life Sciences, JNU, Director of HRDC of UGC at JNU and Director of the Advanced Research Facility of JNU. She served in these key administrative positions for 6 years.
Prof. Rentala Madhubala’s research focus is Tropical diseases. Her major contributions are in Medical Biotechnology spanning Drug Development, the development of diagnostic biomarkers for drug resistance in clinical isolates, point-of-care devices and diagnostic assays for infectious diseases, vaccine development, high throughput immunological screening of vaccine candidates, and vaccine concept development. She has over 129 research publications in high-impact international journals and 32 research scholars obtained their Ph.D.s under her guidance.
She has been conferred several prestigious awards and honors including the President of India’s Visitor Award for research, the Rockefeller Career Award, USA, the Career Research Initiative Award by Welcome Trust, UK and the National Senior Women Bio-scientist Award for lifetime achievements by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. She was elected to The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). She is a member of all the 4 major National Academies of Science - FNA, FNAMS, FNASc, F.A.SC. She has been an adjunct faculty at the Centre for Infectious Diseases, Seattle (aka Seattle Biomedical Research Institute) USA for 15 years while being a full-time faculty member at JNU. She was conferred a Visiting Professorship by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH). She has extensive international training and research experience in infectious diseases with several global collaborations and projects with institutions in the USA, UK, Israel, Sweden, Canada, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Japan and South Korea. She was principally responsible for managing international training programs in Global Infectious Diseases for six years in association with the University of Washington, Seattle USA, and Seattle Biomed supported by grants from NIH, USA.
She was Director, Academic Staff College, Jawaharlal Nehru University from 2014-2016 and was Director Advanced Instrumentation Research Facility Jawaharlal Nehru University from 2011-2013 and was Dean, School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University from March 2009 till March 2011. She started working on Leishmania for the first time in 1990 and has now a fully established laboratory in Leishmania research at the School of Life sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Prof. Madhubala's contribution has been identification of chemotherapeutic targets, development of diagnostic biomarkers for drug resistance in Leishmania and identification of potential vaccine candidates. Her post-doctoral training in the USA was on Cancer research. She is also running a major "Global Infectious diseases training program grant" supported by Fogarty International Centre of NIH, USA. http://www.sbri-india-gid.org/home/workshop.asp with Leishmania as a major thrust area. She has been teaching Molecular Parasitology and Cell and Molecular Biology for the last 24 years at the University. She has trained several young investigators and has got them interested in Intracellular pathogen research. She has produced 28 Ph.Ds till date.
Educational qualifications:
Prof. Rentala Madhubala completed her B.Sc. in Zoology, holding 3rd Rank, from the prestigious Delhi University way back in 1971. Later on, she went to obtain her Master’s Degree from the same institution in 1973. In 1974, she completed her M. Phil in Life Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Thereafter she enrolled herself as a Ph.D Student, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad and obtained her Doctorate Degree in 1983.
